Ms. Ventura's first grade class came to the library this afternoon to listen to and discuss The Rainbow Tulip by Pat Mora. This book is told from the point of view of a first grade student named Estelita (called Stella at school) who struggles to embrace being different from her peers in various ways. This beautifully illustrated story embraces diversity, family and individuality.
Overall, the feedback from the students indicated that this was a good read -aloud. It generated several discussion points for students. Several students could relate to speaking a different language at home than at school and wanting their peers to accept their differences. My favorite part during the wrap up of our discussion was when I asked my Spanish speaking friends for feedback on my poor Spanish pronunciation -- she was kind but honest.
